Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your cake pans.
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the flour mixture.
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
After the cakes are completely cool, frost as desired or serve plain.
